3. Question: How can I be sure I'm going to heaven?
Answer: The Lord in 1 John 4:13 says: "These things are written that you may know that you have eternal life." You can be sure you are going to heaven by believing the gospel of Jesus. Once you have believed the gospel, prayed, believed Jesus to forgive you forever and surrendered to Jesus as your God and Master, the Lord Jesus gave you His gift of assurance that you will go to heaven when you die. The Lord said in Romans 10:13: "Whoever calls upon the Name of the Lord will be saved." True saving faith is the Lord's gift of assurance that He saved you and forgave you forever when you asked Him to.
In addition, the Lord said there will be specific evidences that you have received eternal life:
a. You will have assurance that Jesus paid the penalty for all of your sins on the cross and that you are forgiven forever. Ephesians 2:8-9; John 3:16-18.
b. You will have assurance that you began a personal relationship with Jesus when you asked Him to forgive you; you continue to know Jesus personally through prayer as your God, Savior and Friend; you know Jesus better each day, month and year as you know more about His Word the Bible and experience His Spirit working in and through your life. John 17:3-5. Once you meet Jesus as your Savior, Lord God and Friend, nothing can ever change your relationship with Him; no sinful, wrong thought, no sinful, wrong action can change your relationship with Him; He loves us unconditionally; Jesus chose to die on the cross for you because He knew we could not be perfect; Jesus will forever be your Savior, Lord God and Friend. Romans 8:31-39; Hebrews 13:5.
c. You will have assurance that when you received the Spirit of Jesus into your heart you submitted to Him as your Lord and God, you gave Him control of your life, and you became a different person. You now have the desire to live for the Lord by obeying His commands in the Bible. You have conviction from God. "Conviction" is a sense of knowing when you have done wrong. When you, as a Christian, commit a sin, the Spirit of Jesus speaks to you, tells you how you have grieved Him and angered Him and He guides you to turn from the sin and seek His power to say no to that sin in the furure. As a Christian, you are led by the Spirit of Jesus daily to become more like Him in how you think, how you prioritize, how you act and react toward others. John 3:3; John 14:15; John 15:14; 1 John 2:3-6.
At times, those who are born again Christians doubt their salvation but doubt is not evidence you are not a Christian! All Christians doubt their salvation at some time. Some Christians wonder if they were ever born again because they sin too much. If you were not a Christian, you would not care that you sin! Our grief about our sin is part of the conviction of the Spirit. Jesus is speaking to you, leading you to seek His power to overcome temptation to sin so sin will not keep hurting you. Jesus took the punishment for our sin on the cross because He knew we could not be perfect after becoming a Christian. Even the Apostle Paul wrote, "Why do I keep doing the things I do not want to do?" Romans 7:15. To overcome doubt about your salvation go to www.calvarypilotpoint.com/WhydoIdoubtmysalvation.dsp
